Hyowon Moon received his B.S. degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and M.S. degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 2010 and 2012, respectively, and Ph.D. degree in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA, in 2021. He is currently a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Quantum Technology in Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), and an Assistant Professor at the Division of Nanoscience and Technology in University of Science and Technology (UST), Seoul, Korea. His research interests include optical fiber sensors, quantum photonics with two-dimensional materials, and optoelectronic devices.

Low-dimensional materials have attracted significant attention in recent decades for their potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, and sensing. Their unique characteristing including scalability, structural stability, and ease of stacking provides great potential for applications in integrated optoelectronic and photonic devices. Recently, single-photon emissions from low-dimensional materials have been observed, making them a promissing platform for quantum communication, computing, or sensing. This seminar will provides an overview of the current advancements, opportunities, and challenges for single-photon sources hosted in low-dimensional materials, including atomic defects in wide-bandgap hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and localized excitons in semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).
