As a researcher specializing in Reinforcement Learning for robotic planning and control (PLAN), this presentation outlines the pursuit of creating generalist AI policies for robots. It demonstrates that while significant progress is being made on the AI 'brain,' the ultimate performance is bottlenecked by the physical hardware responsible for sensation (SENSE) and movement (ACT). To address this, the presentation then turns to the field of nanotechnology, introducing several exciting, real-world examples—such as graphene skins and microrobot swarms—that are already solving these 'SENSE' and 'ACT' challenges. The talk concludes by highlighting the immense potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, where advancements in nano-enabled sensors and actuators can be united with generalist AI policies to create the next generation of robotics.
