■ Title: Fault-tolerant quantum computation with low engineering overhead
■ Speaker: Prof. Isaac Hyun Kim (Sydney Univ.)
■ Time: Aug. 20, Thu. 16:00
■ Place: 83221 (2nd Research Building)
■ Abstract:
Many leading approaches to building a fault-tolerant quantum computer involves a large amount of engineering overhead, often associated with the delicate individual control of the qubits. I will discuss our ongoing work on a fault-tolerant quantum computing protocol that can substantially reduce this control overhead. The protocol at face value does not appear to be fault-tolerant because errors occurring during the protocol propagate to a highly non-local error. However, a careful analysis shows that these non-local effects do not compromise the protocol, leading to a suppression of error.
Dr Isaac Kim works on various theoretical aspects of quantum information and computation. He is currently focusing on the development of quantum algorithms that can be used in near and longer-term quantum computers. He also works on the application of quantum information to condensed matter physics and high energy physics.
