• The cover glass of modern smartphones serves as both a protective layer and an optical interface, requiring a unique balance of transparency, durability and thinness. This presentation will briefly review the key optical properties of cover glass, including light transmission, refractive index, surface reflection and the role of coatings in reducing glare and enhancing color fidelity. At the same time, the mechanical properties such as hardness, scratch resistance, fracture toughness and flexibility will be discussed, with emphasis on the ion-exchange chemical strengthening and differences between conventional strengthened aluminosilicate glass and the emerging ultra-thin glass (UTG) used in foldable devices. By integrating both optical and mechanical perspectives, this talk aims to provide an understanding of the challenges and strategies in designing next-generation cover glass for smartphones.
