Thermoelectricity enables direct energy conversion between heat and electricity through the Seebeck, Peltier, and Thomson effects. This lecture provides a systematic introduction to thermoelectric phenomena and devices, linking fundamental transport physics with practical applications.
We begin by examining the physical origin of thermoelectricity and the associated transport phenomena. Based on the derived thermoelectric governing equations, the structure and operation of thermoelectric devices will be discussed: including P-N leg paring, electrical-series/thermal-parallel geometries, and the effect of material properties on conversion efficiency.
In the latter part of the lecture, we will address the microscopic perspective, focusing on first-principles approaches to computing charge and heat transport.
Finally, the lecture will highlight the current status of thermoelectric technologies: including applications in deep-space exploration, waste-heat recovery in ship and steel working, self-powered sources sensor systems, laser temperature stabilization, and active cooling for chip hot spots.
